Scambusters: Phony Damaged Cards Scam
According to the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association, recently, members from a western PA credit union began receiving automated phone messages advising them that there was a problem with their debit/credit cards. The message advised the members that to fix the problem, they should “press 1 for the security department.” They were then prompted to enter their 16-digit card number. Caller ID screens showed a number of 1402 when the calls were made. Please be aware of this type of scam because often, the scammers don’t stop at one credit union. If you ever receive a message that asks you to provide personal information, stop and think about what is being asked. Should the credit union need me to give them numbers they already have? Then, contact the Credit Union using a trusted phone number. |
