Why Join a Credit Union?

  • Lower Rates on Loans / Higher Yields on Savings

  • Unlike banks and other financial institutions, credit unions are not-for-profit. This means that instead of having to produce a high profit for a few exclusive shareholders, credit unions return excess earnings to their members. This is done in the form of higher dividends on savings and investments, lower interest rates on loans, or through the addition of new products and services.

  • You Know Us, We Know You

  • Unlike the megabank mergers of late, BTFCU remains dedicated to its select group of members. You aren't dealing with strangers in distant places, you're dealing with your friends and neighbors. Our Credit Union is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors. Those directors are elected annually from the membership and are truly concerned with what's best for the credit union, not what's in it for them.

  • Save Big on Fees

  • The new megabanks have instituted high fees for everything from having a checking account to using their automated teller machines (ATMs). You'll find that many of our services are at no charge to members. Where there are fees, they are substantially below commercial banks.

    Back to Credit Union Membership

*Once you become a Credit Union member, you can invite your family members to join. Your entire family including your spouse, children, siblings, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, stepchildren, stepparents, stepsibilings, and adopted children can all become BTFCU members. You're welcome to remain a credit union member for life, regardless of whether you change jobs, move, or retire.

How Do I Apply for Membership?

Application is easy. We have a membership application form online (click here to see it) which you may fill out and then bring, mail or fax to the Credit Union. We will then produce a signature card which you (and any optional joint members) must sign in person at the credit union during regular business hours.

If you are already a member, have your family members sign up so that they may enjoy the benefits of a Credit Union membership.

Who is Eligible to Join BTFCU?

Since our founding in 1935, our Federal Charter has been educationally focused. That means that schools, school districts, daycare facilities, institutions of higher learning and non-profit organizations that provide some type of education as part of its list of services, fit within our charter guidelines. These organizations are known as Select Employee Groups or SEGs.

Our SEGs are typically within approximately 10 miles of our Bethlehem office. However, employees need not worry about geographic guidelines. Being employed by a Select Employee Group entitles you and your family* to membership eligibility. Why not spread the good news about the credit union and all it has to offer? Your family members can enjoy the same great service you have come to count on here at the Credit Union. We would love to have them as members, too!

Employees of the following organizations (and their families*) are eligible for membership in the Bethlehem Teachers Federal Credit Union:

*Once you become a Credit Union member, you can invite your family members to join. Your entire family including your spouse, children, siblings, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, stepchildren, stepparents, stepsibilings, and adopted children can all become BTFCU members. You're welcome to remain a credit union member for life, regardless of whether you change jobs, move, or retire.

New Federal Regulation IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PROCEDURES FOR OPENING A NEW ACCOUNT
To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.
What this means for you: When you open an account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your driver's license or other identifying documents.
